Fucking editing

I am severely annoyed.

Last week, I thought I had come across an amazing treasure. At work, we have been throwing around boxes, and sorting through textbooks, merchandise, and trash. In one box, I found the entire 7 book run of The Dark Tower by Stephen King. I was busting. I was so fucking happy.

Then, I started to read.

I have been a huge fan of the series. I have read all of the books. I have read each of the first 4 books at least 3 or 4 times each. So, it was clear from the start that something was different. I checked the cover and my thoughts were confirmed. Stephen King had pulled a George Lucas. He had revised the original books (written in 1982) to more closely tie together with the final 3 books (which were all written after he was hit by that van, 20 years after the original.)

For the most part, the changes are nothing special, just adding in names and things that will be explained further later on. The changes were small, some of them good, some of them are barely noticeable, some were subtractions that were missed. I was instantly nervous about his increased focus on the number 19. This addition changed some fundamentals in relationships and character that were awkward, but not too bad. Until the final scene in Tull.

That's when Greedo shot first. The change was nothing more than two lines of dialogue from Allie and a line of prose, but it changed a fundamental aspect of the gunslinger's personality. It absolved him of a sin that was an integral part of his being. It focused on his training and instincts, made him a machine who eventually regains his humanity over the course of the series, but that has been taken away.

I'm going to keep reading, because the story has hold of me, as it always does. I just hope this is the only major change.
