The Evolution of The Eels

I've had an on and off love affait with The Eels over the years. In 1998, I discovered their breakout album "Beautiful Freak" and became obsessed.

They filled my 16 year old brain with lines like:

"You're such a beautiful freak
I bet you are flying inside"

"Here comes a girl with long brown hair
Who can't be more than seventeen
She sucks on a red popsicle while she pushes a baby girl
In a pink carriage
And i'm thinking that must be her sister
That must be her sister, right?
They go into the 7-11
And i keep walking"

"There's a world outside
And i know 'cause i've heard talk
In my sweetest dream
I would go out for a walk

But i don't think i'm ready yet
I'm not feeling up to it now
Just not that steady yet
And i don't need you telling me how"

"One day the world will be ready for you
And wonder how they didn't see"

Just recently I've put the time into their new album, "Blinking Lights And Other Revelations".

Now my 24 year old brain gets goodness like:

"Every moment's built to last
When you're living without a past
In a magic world"

"Mother couldn't love me
But that didn't stop me
From liking her
She was my mom
And i was no son of a bitch"

"Trouble with dreams is they don't come true
And when they do they can't catch up to you"

"Trouble with dreams is you never know
When to hold on and when to let go"

"Trouble with dreams is you can't pretend
Something with no beginning has an end"

"Nothing hurts
Like someone who knows
Everything about you
Leaving you behind"

"The dust of ages
Settles on your days
But i'm not fuckin' around anymore
I'm on my way"

"Have you ever made love to a beautiful girl
Made you feel like it's not such a bad world
Hey man now you're really living"

"Do you know what it's like to care too much
'bout someone that you're never gonna get to touch
Hey man now you're really living"

"Have you ever sat down in the fresh cut grass
And thought about the moment and when it will pass
Hey man now you're really living"

"Whatever happened to soy bomb?"
